Mangaluru to run domestic air cargo unit as private partnership

MANGALURU International Airport (MIA) at Kenjar is to become the first of 22 Indian airports to run a domestic air cargo terminal with private participation, according to airport director JT Radhakrishna.

At present, apart from the metro airports, domestic air cargo terminals are operating in airports like Coimbatore, Lucknow, and Jaipur and these are managed by Airports Authority of India (AAI), reports Delhi's Times of India.

The AAI came up with the idea of running air cargo terminals with private participation at 22 airports, including Mangaluru, Ahmedabad, Trichy, and Vizag.

The tender process is on-going in these places, but Mangaluru has emerged as the first airport in finalising the process and obtaining security clearances from the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security in New Delhi.

Mr Radhakrishna said many valuable goods, perishables, medicines, routine software parts, and essential machinery parts can be sent by air cargo, from one airport to another in the country.

Currently, 150-200 tonnes/packs of mail bags are being sent monthly from MIA on a regular basis from the passenger terminal building itself, as there are no separate facilities for domestic air cargo terminals, causing inconvenience to passengers.

To avoid the inconvenience to passengers and to meet security operational requirements, a separate common user domestic cargo terminal (CUDCT) has been set up and the operation in Mangaluru will be run by M/s Cargo Service Centre CSE, Mumbai.
