US port productivity bill garners massive shipper support
NEW legislation aimed at providing US Congress with a database of port performance to avoid crippling west coast alongshore go-slows has won support from shippers and sundry stakeholders.
The group of 100 manufacturers, retailers, farmers, distributors and logistics providers voiced their support for the bill sponsor, South Dakota's Republican Senator John Thane, reported Newark's Journal of Commerce.
"This bill is an important first step to truly gain visibility into how US ports are operating," the shippers said.
"We believe that establishing a port performance measurement and reporting programme based on sound data will enable the responsible federal agencies to prepare meaningful annual reports on the performance and capacity of the nation's key ports."
The legislation, introduced last month, aims to keep Congress more in the loop on port congestion flare-ups and gauge how labour negotiations impact port performance.
The bill would require the Bureau of Transportation Statistics to create a port performance statistics programme and update Congress annually on the capacity and performance of key ports.
The bill would also require the Department of Transportation to report on the state of port performance before and after the expiration of labour contracts.
