Ceylon Shipping Corporation to acquire own vessels

Sri Lanka’s Ports and Shipping Minister Arjuna Ranatunga says he would take measures for the Sri Lanka’s oldest national carrier, Ceylon Shipping Corporation to acquire its own vessels.

Addressing a media conference in view of the 44th Anniversary of the Shipping Corporation, the Minister said he would convert the Shipping Corporation which lacks vessels into an establishment which possesses ships.

The media briefing was organized in a vessel which serves the Shipping Corporation.

Currently the Shipping Corporation has around 20 vessels servicing the carrier but it does not own a single vessel.

Most of the ships it possessed earlier had been sold.

The Minister observed the vessel Irene’s Wisdom and had a cordial discussion with the members of the staff.

Chairman of Ceylon Shipping Corporation Shashi Dhanatunge presented the Corporation’s plan for the next five years to the Minister.

The Ceylon Shipping Corporation plans to launch ferry and cruise operations to nearby destinations such as India, Bangladesh, the Maldives and Myanmar, to support the national agenda of increasing tourism and regional cooperation.

The Ceylon Shipping Corporation (CSC), the oldest national carrier of Sri Lanka, was established in 1971 as a fully government owned enterprise. In 1992 the government conferring more commercial independence converted the corporation to Ceylon Shipping Corporation Limited (CSCL).
