Florida's Canaveral port launches box shop run by Gulftainer
GULFTAINER based in the United Arab Emirates has opened its first US container terminal near Florida's famous rocket launch site Cape Canaveral.
The terminal begins operations with an annual box handling capacity of 200,000 TEU, which it plans ramp up to 750,000 TEU.
The new facility is equipped with two berths, two cranes and has 20 acres of land already developed.
The Canaveral Port Authority has granted the global ports and logistics company a 35-year concession to operate the terminal, as well as permission to further develop the container and multipurpose cargo terminal, reported Trade Arabia.
Gulftainer USA, which has established its headquarters at the port, is expected to contribute US$630 million to the local economy and create 2,000 direct and indirect jobs when fully developed, the company was cited as saying in a statement.
The new terminal has already welcomed its first customer, the 4,298-TEU CMA CGM Jamaica.
Said Gulftainer chairman Badr Jafar: "Container shipping is a $6 trillion industry that touches 95 per cent of the world's manufactured goods, and we are determined to bring much more of that business to Port Canaveral in the months and years to come."
