Long Beach up 1.3pc to 6.8 million TEU as LA rises 6pc to 8.3 million TEU

THE Port of Long Beach posted 1.3 per cent year-on-year increase in container volume in 2014 to 6.8 million TEU, while the neighbouring Port of Los Angeles increased six per cent to 8.3 million TEU.

For Long Beach, it was the third busiest year behind 2006 and 2007, a distinction it shared with LA, which issued its annual statistics the day before.



Long Beach imports increased 1.8 per cent to 3.5 million TEU, while exports declined 5.9 per cent to 1.6 million TEU. The number of empties was up 8.2 per cent to 1.7 million.



But volumes fell 2.6 per cent year on year in December to 567,237 TEU. Imports dropped 5.1 per cent to 276,516 TEU. Exports fell 11.2 per cent to 131,496 TEU. Empties rose to 159,225 TEU, an increase of 11.5 per cent.



Los Angeles posted its busiest year in 2006, when it handled as much as 8.5 million TEU, while its second best came the following year in 2007 with 8.5 million TEU.



In December, Los Angeles posted a one per cent year-on-year increase to 658,567 TEU with imports up 4.4 per cent to 336,674 TEU and exports down 12 per cent to 152,112 TEU.



This, the port attributed to both weaker demand and a stronger US dollar. Empties rose seven per cent to 169,780 TEU.
