Los Angeles 2014 box volume up 6pc to 8.3 million TEU - best since 2007
THE Port of Los Angeles has posted a six per cent year-on-year container volume increase to 8.3 million TEU in 2014 - its busiest year since 2007.
This, despite being plagued with historic levels of congestion with labour go-slows as fruitless contract talks drag on no closer to resolution than they were shortly after they began.
The port recorded its busiest year in 2006, when it handled as much as 8.5 million TEU, while its second best came the following year in 2007 with 8.5 million TEU.
In December, Los Angeles posted a one per cent year-on-year increase to 658,567 TEU with imports up 4.4 per cent to 336,674 TEU and exports down 12 per cent to 152,112 TEU.
This, the port attributed to both weaker demand and a stronger US dollar. Empties rose seven per cent to 169,780 TEU.
Port executive director Gene Seroka said improved volumes were a sign that the US economy was gaining strength.
