US trade groups see Cuba as America's soya export bonanza

AMERICAN trade groups have formed a coalition to promote agricultural exports to Cuba, establishing the US Agriculture Coalition for Cuba (USACC) in the wake of the lifting of a long-standing trade ban against the communist country.

"Like any new and developing market, Cuba represents a great opportunity for soybean farmers in the US," said American Soybean Association (ASA) president Wade Cowan, a charter member of the USACC, reported American Shipper.

Soybeans, along with soybean meal and oil, are the US' leading agricultural export, and soy meal is a major protein source in pork and poultry feed. The demand for these products has increased in Cuba, according to ASA.

"As part of the USACC, we'll work with our fellow organisations at all points in the supply chain to ensure that the relationship between the US and Cuba is one that benefits both countries," Mr Wade said.

"As an organisation strongly supportive of an open, rules-based global trading system, we look forward to working with all sectors of the business community supportive of this initiative to normalise our trade relations with Cuba," said president of the National Foreign Trade Council Bill Reinsch.
