LA port truck drivers become employees and vote to join Teamsters union
HARBOUR truckers who work for Los Angeles-based Shippers Transport Express, a unit of SSA Marine, have voted 88-23 to join the Teamsters union having changed their status to become employees rather than independent contractors.
In November, Shippers Transport drivers were notified that the company was adopting an employee-based business model from January 1 and were invited to apply for employee jobs.
"We are grateful that Shippers agreed to remain neutral during our campaign to become Teamsters," said driver Mike Acosta, reported the American Journal of Transportation.
"As Teamsters - and professional port truck drivers - we look forward to working with management to move port cargo more efficiently and to modernise the industry," he said.
Said Teamsters port director Fred Potter: "As Teamsters, Shippers Transport drivers will now begin negotiating a first contract."
Said Shippers general manager Kevin Baddeley: "We took a neutral position because we respect our drivers' right to form a union. Through dialogue with the Teamsters, we anticipate we will be able to improve efficiencies and stabilise our workforce."
