Buenos Aires new Tecplata box terminal opens to an uncertain future
MANILA's International Container Terminal Services Inc has opened its Buenos Aires 450,000-TEU capacity box shop two years behind schedule.
The Tecplata terminal has 11 metres alongside and features four made-in-China quay crane, reported Port Finance International.
Although the terminal was greeted with initial optimism by the port authorities, the facility's outlook remains uncertain as the port faces declining volumes and is face with rivals.
Buenos Aires' port volumes have shrunk by 22 per cent since 2008.
"The fall has been very steep. I think that it has exceeded the projection of all operators," said Tecplata general manager Eduardo Zabalza.
"Argentine trade has, however, historically recovered quickly and we expect to clinch an accord sometime in 2015."
