First backhaul stop for Maersk's 18,300-TEU Marstal to be Tangier-Med

THE first call of Maersk's 18,300-TEU Marstal, will be the port of Tangiers in Morocco after it leaves Rotterdam in February.

The vessel is being deployed on the Danish carrier's Asia-Europe service (AE10).

Last year Tangier-Med Port handled a record three million TEU, an increase of 20 per cent compared to 2.55 million TEU in 2013.

This strong result was generated by 2,100 ship stopovers, comprising 800 at Maersk's APMT terminal and 1,300 at Eurogate terminal, with traffic up 11 per cent and 34 per cent respectively, according to port director Rachid Houari, reported Port Finance International, London.

The Marstal is 399 metres long and 59 metres wide and is currently undergoing final testing and checks in Rotterdam's newly expanded Maasvlakte II dock that opened in December and is one of the most advanced automated terminals developed by operator APMT.
