USAC receives second 14,993-TEU newbuilding ordered in 2013
UNITED Arab Shipping Company (UASC) has taken delivery of the 14,993-TEU Al Murabba built by Hyundai Heavy Industries' (HHI) shipyard in Ulsan, South Korea.
She is the second of a newbuilding programme initiated in August 2013, comprising 17 mega ships, split into six vessels of 18,800 TEU and 11 units of 14,993 TEU.
The smaller vessels are fitted with 1,000 reefer plugs and are designed and prepared "for a quick and cost-efficient LNG retrofit at a later stage", reported Alphaliner. This LNG-ready concept has been confirmed with an Approval in Principle from classification society DNV GL as an industry first.
Ship construction is shared between Hyundai Heavy Industries at Ulsan and Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries at Mokpo, Korea.
The Al Murabba follows the Sajir, delivered in November. She is to join her sister on the Asia-North Europe service jointly offered by CMA CGM, CSCL and UASC within the Ocean Three (O3) agreement (named respectively FAL 8/AEX 1/AEC 1 by each carrier).
All 17 ships are expected to be delivered by September 2016.
