LR classes Pieter Schelte – the world’s largest vessel

The finishing touches are being added to the world’s largest vessel, Allseas’ Pieter Schelte, at the port of Rotterdam over the next few months. The building of the heavy lift and pipelay vessel has been and continues to be one of Lloyd’s Register’s most ambitious and complex projects.

The 382-metre-long vessel, which was built at DSME’s Okpo shipyard in South Korea, is being fitted with her main mission equipment ready for final testing before she becomes operational in around four months’ time.

LR has overseen the plan approval, design, building and classification of the vessel since 2007. “The design was novel in almost all respects, and extreme loading requirements were needed on many elements of this very large ship, leading to high steel grades and heavy plate thicknesses. Equally intense was the effort and energy spent on site at DSME’s shipyard by both the Allseas and Lloyd’s Register teams in order to make sure that the design on paper became reality as we see it now,” says Edward Heerema, owner of Allseas
