MSC drops congestion surcharge at Omani Sohar port for imports from Europe
WITH congestion easing at Oman's largest port, Mediterranean Shipping Co (MSC), is dropping its congestion surcharge of US$100 per TEU levied in the autumn on shipments from Europe to Sohar.
"In view of the improved situation at Sohar, the congestion surcharge applied since September 1 has been suspended," the shipping line said in a customer advisory.
Berthing delays and inland slowdowns at Oman International Container Terminal following the relocation of all cargo operations from Muscat to Sohar led to the imposition of emergency surcharges by ocean carriers, including Maersk Line, CMA CGM and Hapag-Lloyd.
OICT, a joint venture between Hong Kong's Hutchison Port Holdings and the government of Oman, currently has an annual throughput capacity of 1.5 million TEU. When fully built with the addition of a third facility, the new hub will have a capacity of 5.3 million TEU per annum.
