Westports expansion starts, ups capacity from 11 million TEU to 13.8 million
WORK on the expansion of Westport Malaysia's Container Terminal 8 is expected to start within a few weeks and the job is to be completed within a year, according to and Bursa Malaysia exchange filing.
At full buildout, including Phase II. the project will increase capacity of Westports from the present 11 million TEU to 13.8 million TEU.
Muhibbah Engineering has been awarded a MYR135 million (US$39.2 million) contract for the construction of a 300-metre extension of the quay, plus access bridges and associated works.
The Container Terminal 8 expansion plan aims to deal with rising container volumes and the terminal's current high utilisation rate. The second part of the expansion project, known as Part B is expected to be completed in the latter half of 2016.
