PMA says dockers union brings 'slowdown tactics to bargaining table'
AFTER dawdling on local issues at the docker union's insistence, the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) and the employers' Pacific Maritime Association (PMA) were to resume talks on broader issues for the first time since November 2.
Leading actors PMA president Jim McKenna and ILWU president Bob McEllrath spoke of the hiatus in different terms, reported American Shipper.
The PMA accused the ILWU of taking "slowdown tactics to the bargaining table," by not continuing talks right up until Thanksgiving, while the ILWU said the subcommittee talks were constructive.
Meanwhile, there are continuing delays in berthing ships. The Marine Exchange of Southern California said that there were 12 vessels at anchor.
Said ILWU spokesman Craig Merrilees: "Both parties met in subcommittee, and had very productive discussions. Both agreed to spend today working independently on various issues for big table consideration."
