Korean university sets goal to design and develop its own 25,000-TEUer

A CONTAINERSHIP with the capacity to carry 25,000 TEU is being designed and developed by the Korea Ship and Offshore Research Institute (Kosori) at Busan National University.

So far the title of the world's largest box ship is held by the nation's Hyundai Heavy Industries' (HHI), which is building 19,000 TEU vessels for China Shipping Container Lines (CSCL) that were ordered in May 2013.

The institute said that it was previously thought impossible for a ship to hold more than 20,000 TEU.

Kosori said that it would be using its buckling analysis technique to ensure optimal structure of a ship of that size, reported Vancouver Ship&Bunker.

The institute said that it has been working with STX Offshore & Shipbuilding, Japanese classification society ClassNK, US-based DRS Group Inc and NAPA Finland on the project for the past three years.

Lloyd's Register commented last month that current shipping volumes supported the eventual creation of a 24,000 TEU containership.
