Paradox: Socal chassis in short supply, but the so is the number of users
DESPITE vociferous complaints about the lack of chassis at southern California ports, there are more chassis available than users, reports American Shipper.
Statistics from Flexi-Van Leasing suggest that despite the outcry, there is a lack of demand for chassis rather than an actual equipment shortage.
Utilisation rates for the Los Angeles Basin Pool - which contains 36,800 chassis owned by Flexi-Van, China Shipping and TRAC Intermodal - declined year on year, meaning many units are sitting idle.
Flexi-Van manages the pool, which includes auditing the chassis usage. The dwell time for containers sitting on a chassis at a rail or marine terminal was up 19.6 percent in October year on year.
