Savannah October container volume increases 13.6pc to 311,759 TEU
SAVANNAH's Garden City Terminal posted a 13.6 per cent year-on-year increase in October container volume to a record 311,759 TEU, announced the Georgia Port Authority (GPA).
Fiscal year to date, the GPA has moved 1.2 million TEU, an increase of 13.1 per cent year on year.
Other records set in October said the GPA, were the highest number of truck gate moves at Garden City Terminal (213,445), and the most containers moved by rail via CSX and Norfolk Southern.
"Strong growth across all key sectors of our business is an indication that our ports are reaching a larger and more diverse customer base," said GPA executive director Curtis Foltz.
Said GPA chairman James Walters: "To accommodate continued growth, we are taking steps to increase capacity from 4.5 million TEU per year to 6.5 million."
The Brunswick autoport moved 224,197 roll-on/roll-off units this fiscal year. Combined with vehicles moved via Savannah's Ocean Terminal, that came to 232,009 units, up 3.4 per cent fiscal year to date, while October volume was up 1.4 per cent to 63,218 units.
Separately, the GPA board approved construction of Gate 8, a US$10.2 million project that will serve as the third major truck interchange at Garden City Terminal. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2015.
