Terrorists fire on Egyptian Navy near Suez, killing and wounding sailors
TERRORISTS near the north end of the Suez Canal opened fire from a fishing boat on an Egyptian naval launch which shot back, killing at least four of the attackers, reported state media.
No one immediately claimed responsibility. The Egyptian Army, which said eight men were still missing, has recently sustained attacks by Islamist militants in the Sinai, reported The Associated Press.
The military said in an earlier statement it had destroyed four of the terrorist boats and captured 32 individuals. The statement said five navy personnel were wounded, reported Israel's Haaretz newspaper.
Two attacks in the Sinai Peninsula last month killed 33 security personnel, prompting the army to declare a three-month state of emergency in the surrounding areas and clear a security barrier along the border with the Gaza Strip.
A recent on-line Al Qaeda publication "Resurgence" published an article entitled "Achilles Heel of Western Economies" which advised terrorists to attack choke points of world shipping near the Suez Canal to drive up insurance rates and encourage greater naval expenditure.
Terrorist attacks have increased since July 2013 when then-army chief Abdel Fattah al-Sisi led an army ouster of elected Islamist President Mohamed Mursi following protests against his rule, said Reuters
