ILWU: No deal exists to work normally - we disagree on what 'normal' means
US WEST coast dockers deny their employers' press statement by saying they did not renege on an agreement to work "normally" during contract talks because no such agreement existed, Reuters reports.
Thus the International Longshore and warehouse Union (ILWU) did not deny the employers' Pacific Maritime Association (PMA) charge that the dockers staged a slowdown at Tacoma and Seattle, only that they broke no deal in doing so.
"The PMA's press statement dishonestly accuses the ILWU of breaking a supposed agreement that normal operations would continue until an agreement could be reached," said the ILWU press statement.
"This is a bold-faced lie," said the union. "No such agreement was ever made, nor could it be made given the parties historic disagreement regarding the definition of 'normal operations.'"
The resulting congestion was partly the result of "employer mismanagement", said ILWU spokesman Craig Merrilees
