DHL invests US$38 million to expand South African warehousing
THE Supply Chain and Global Forwarding divisions of DHL are investing a total of EUR30.5 million (US$38.06 million) in South Africa to develop state-of-the-art infrastructure, IT systems and offer world-class services to businesses operating in Africa.
The funds are being used to open two new facilities located in Plumbago, close to the OR Tambo International Airport east of Johannesburg, to expand the company's logistics services and use its South African assets as a springboard into the rest of Africa.
"Today, emerging market revenues contribute just over 20 per cent of the group's revenues; by 2020, the group expects this figure to climb to 30 per cent," said DHL Global Forwarding and Freight CEO Roger Crook.
For DHL Global Forwarding, the new EUR16 million facility located at the Plumbago Business Park boasts 12,000 square metres of warehouse space for cargo handling and 5,500 square metres of office space.
As a TAPA "certified warehouse, the facility offers customers value-added-services (VAS) such as bonded storage and re-packing, and further grows its air freight and ocean freight export handling capabilities.
DHL Global Forwarding country manager Twine Mtya: "We have seen particular growth in our robust intermodal road network, spanning 12 African countries - road freight volumes have more than doubled in the past year, spurred by increasing demand and economic growth on the continent."
The company also expects to reduce its CO2 emissions by 700,000 kilogrammes per annum by consolidating its Johannesburg operations into one facility. Emission reduction will be achieved through the use of solar power energy and more efficient material handling at the warehouses.
DHL Supply Chain's EUR14.5 million 25,000-square metre multi-user warehouse facility has been purpose-built for the technology and consumer industries.
Its design includes high density storage up to 16 metres in height for fast moving consumer goods (FMCG), optimised operational flows, a super flat floor necessary for such high-level storage and retrieval and the latest technology on reach trucks.
The facility will offer market leading warehousing management systems, and boasts eco-friendly features including an energy efficient lighting system, and rain water harvesting for vehicle washing.
