24 dead as Bosphorus shipping halted when refugee boat sinks
THE sinking of a boat carrying at least 42 Afghan illegal migrants, including children, at the mouth of the Istanbul's Bosphorus strait suspended traffic on November 3 from 10:20 am (0820 GMT) due to the search and rescue operations, and resumed at 1100 GMT, GAC said.
Rescuers pulled 24 bodies from the Black Sea and rescued seven people.
The vessel was heading for Constanta in Romania when it sank four miles off the Bosphorus, but it was unclear where it set off to sea.
There was no official comment on the number of people travelling on the vessel, however, it is believed that 12 children and seven women were on board, reported Reuters.
"They had life jackets. But there were bodies everywhere. Babies, children... We pulled out 15-20 bodies," the Hurriyet news website reported, quoting fisherman Kadir Sert as saying.
Seven coastguard vessels, a helicopter and a diving team were sent to the area to search for survivors and bodies, the coastguard said in a statement. The search operation is continuing.
