Cosco's Piraeus CT orders 9 zero emission RTGs from Kalmar
PIRAEUS Container Terminal (PCT) in Greece, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Cosco Pacific, has signed a repeat order for nine all-electric rubber-tyre gantry cranes (RTG) with Kalmar, part of Cargotec.
The cranes to be delivered next year, four of which are the world's widest, will help the port meet its twin goals of increasing both capacity and savings. The order follows the delivery of 12 RTGs to the terminal in 2013, a statement from the manufacturer said.
"We currently operate Kalmar RTGs straddle carriers, reachstackers, forklift trucks, empty container handlers and terminal tractors," said PCT deputy manager Li Jianchun.
"The latest Kalmar E-One2 Zero Emission RTGs go beyond regular stacking capacity, with four of the units 10+1 wide and five 9+1 wide, which will help us maximise space utilisation in the container yard."
Fitted with the SmartRail automatic gantry steering system, these new cranes have a 41-ton safe working load (SWL) capacity. Their electric power system eliminates all emissions, engine noise and the need for hydraulic oils.
China has made such preliminary bids in Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Venezuela, but has yet to sell a high-speed train.
A Chinese consortium was the bidder to build a 130-mile high-speed rail line in Mexico, said the Mexican government.
