Jackonville's JaxPort annual box volume increases 1pc to 936,973 TEU
THE Port of Jacksonville, or JaxPort, handled 936,973 TEU for fiscal year 2014, ending September 30, representing an increase of one per cent year on year.
Container shipments from Asia grew 20 per cent above the 2013 level.
The Asian container trade is the fastest growing segment of JaxPort's containerised cargo, accounting for 30 per cent of total box throughput, compared to a 24 per cent share the previous year, reported American Shipper.
Currently, 12 shipping lines serving the Asia-US trade lane call at JaxPort via the Panama and Suez. One of the primary carriers is Japan's MOL, which operates the TraPac Terminal at JaxPort. Last year it handled 200,000 TEU.
Auto units fell four per cent to 605,170, while breakbulk tonnage was down 16 per cent to 792,344 tons compared to the previous fiscal year.
Port authority revenue was flat at US$54 million.
The port authority and the state are investing $37.6 million in large quay cranes that can reach 22 to upgrade berths for 8,000 TEUers once the St John River is deepened.
Work is also underway on the construction of an on-dock rail facility at the Dames Point Marine Terminal to be served by CSX Transportation.
