US issues antidumping duty orders on MSG from China, Indonesia
THE US Commerce Department will issue antidumping duty orders on imports of monosodium glutamate (MSG) from China and Indonesia after deciding that they are sold in the US at less than fair value.
The ruling comes after the US International Trade Commission (ITC) determined that a US company was harmed by imports from the two countries of this product that is used as a flavour enhancer in food.
MSG is a white crystalline substance mostly used in meat, fish, soups, certain juices, beverages, frozen and ready-made foods, sauces and dressings.
The petition for the investigation was filed by Ajinomoto North America of Itasca, Illinois, which has a plant in Iowa, reported American Shipper.
The ITC estimated that MSG imports from China and Indonesia totalled US$46.3 million in 2013, while from other countries imports of MSG totalled $4.9 million for the same period.
