Fire blazes after two box ships collide at Port Klang's Westport
TWO containerships, the 8,714-TEU San Felipe and UASC's 13,470-TEU Al Riffa collided in Malaysia's Port Klang, Westport, causing a fire, reports the New Straits Times and the Malay Mail.
The Star Online said Port Klang Authority chairman Tan Sri Kong Cho Ha confirmed that fire at Westport's Wharf 20 about 8pm. No injuries were reported.
The Al Riffa was been towed away from the wharf to prevent the fire from spreading, while the San Felipe, managed by Bernhard Schulte for Ship Finance International (SFI), was left behind as the fire aboard was under control and quickly extinguished.
Bernama new agency reported that emergency call was put through to the Selangor Fire and Rescue Department at 7.38pm.
Several tug boats were sent to the scene to put out the fire using seawater, according to a spokesman from Port Klang Fire and Rescue Services Department, reported Seatrade Global.
Firemen reached the scene at 8.17pm and moved to tow one of the ships one kilometre out to sea to stop the fire from spreading at the wharf.
"Another ship is still at Wharf 20 and work to put out the fire is still being carried out," fire official Ahmad Aidil Ab Majid told Bernama in a text message.
