Maersk doubles Manila congestion surcharge to US$600/FEU
MAERSK has doubled the surcharge on Manila-bound boxes from North America to US$300 per TEU and $600 per FEU from November 1 because of relentless port congestion.
In a notice to trade, Maersk said that its costs in Manila have soared because of the slowdown and increased in vessel turnaround times.
Separately, Maersk announced that worsening congestion at the Port of Batangas, 80 kilometres south of Manila, has led it to keep shipments in the port.
Batangas and Laguna are being used to handle the spillover of cargo from Manila.
"It takes a few months for a bad congestion to build and it will take at least half a year to get out of it," said International Container Terminal Services Inc (ICTSI) vice president Christian Gonzalez.
Congestion in Manila could continue well into next year despite the lifting of citywide truck ban, Mr Gonzalez said.
Last week, AP Moller-Maersk subsidiary MCC Transport, an intra-Asia short sea operator, said that average waiting times in Manila stood was 8.5 days and four days in Batangas.
