Beijing's China Harbour Engineering starts to build new East Africa railway
BEIJING's China Harbour Engineering construction company has been contracted to build a US$13.5 billion standard gauge railway from Kenya to Kampala to be completed by 2018.
The 2,000-kilometre line will ease transport of goods from Rwanda, Congo (DRC), South Sudan and Uganda, heading to Kenya's Mombasa port on the Indian Ocean.
Trains moving at 120 kph are expected to bring down transits to two days from the current eight, reports Reuters. The line will also be extended to Rwanda.
Studies on Kampala-Kigali segment started in July - to be complete by July 2015. The cost of this segment is estimated at $1.2 billion.
China Exim Bank is among the main financiers. Earlier this month Rwanda President Paul Kagame, Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni and South Sudanese President Salva Kiir launched the construction activities in Kampala.
