Russian ship adrift after power loss, towed into Prince Rupert

THE Russian multi-purpose 9,185-dwt Simushir was undergoing repairs after being towed into Prince Rupert on Canada's west coast by the tug Barbara Foss.

The ship had lost power and there were concerns that she might drift ashore and spill oil while making her way from Everett, Washington, to Russian Far East ports, according to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.

Operated by Sakhalin Shipping Company (Sasco), of Kholmsk in the Russian Far East, the ship was carrying 298 containers of mining equipment..

Canadian Coast Guard Ship Gordon Reid, an 886-gross tonne patrol ship arrived, and attempted to tow the stricken vessel, but failed to make headway until the tug arrived and took her into Prince Rupert.
