13,808-TEUer delivered to Evergreen - last of 10 postpanamaxes

EVERGREEN has taken delivery of the 13,808-TEU Thalassa Axia from Enesel SA a Greek unit of London's NS Lemos & Co, the last in a series of 10 postpanamaxes ordered in July 2012 from Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI).

The orders had the backing of 10-year charters to Evergreen all delivered within 13 months, starting with the Thalassa Hellas in September 2013, reports Alphaliner.

At 368 metres long, the ships are 51 metres wide, allowing 20 container rows on deck, but even the expanded Panama Canal will be limited to 49 metres abeam, with only 19 rows on deck.

Enesel concluded the order at US$116.5 million per ship, a low price compared to the $160 million to $170 million paid at the peak of the market in 2008, said Alphaliner.

The Thalassa Axia will join the Far East-Europe CEM service, part of the CKYHE offer, with other alliance partners branding it NE 5.
