FMC calls for 'collaborative effort' to fight waterfront congestion

COLLECTIVE efforts are needed if the US is to beat waterfront congestiokn, which is crippling American ports, says US Federal Maritime Commissioner William Doyle.

Speaking at the annual Port New York/New Jersey Port Industry Day, Mr Doyle called on stakeholders across the supply chain to join the fight, reported Lloyd's List.

Mr Doyle also said that they were not alone when it comes to the problems that have contributed to congestion as they are being felt globally.

"Larger ships are coming, the economic engines are beginning to rev up again, and we have had our share of weather related problems," he said.

"The good news is that infrastructure and port related projects garner bipartisan support,' he said. "The Obama Administration strongly supports the development of our ports through TIGER grants and expedited regulatory reviews.

"Further, Congress recently passed the Water Resources Reform and Development Act of 2014, the first water resources bill signed into law in seven years," said Commissioner Doyle.
