Local companies create 'grey pool' of 3,000 chassis to beat LB congestion
TWO local truck chassis owners, DCLI and TRAC, are adding over 3,000 chassis to their fleets to supply the Port of Long Beach to meet growing demand, reports Lloyd's List.
"Mega containerships with 10,000-plus total moves per call have added pressure on our chassis pools and far too many chassis sit idle on a daily basis," said Long Beach Harbour Commission vice-president Rich Dines, welcoming the move.
"We need to increase the utilisation of the more than 100,000 chassis in the San Pedro Bay port complex.
"Interoperability of equipment through a 'grey' chassis pool will help relieve port congestion and improve the balance of supply and demand throughout our terminals," he said.
Also welcome was the formation of a Congestion Relief Team to counter congestion by monitoring daily performance and is in constant touch stakeholders.
But there were other problems too. "Increasing inbound rail movement of export cargo and developing short-haul rail will help ensure an ample amount of chassis return to port for import delivery," he said.
"It is time we take a systems approach to moving cargo and we will start by building a better chassis model," Mr Dines said.
