Boeing predicts air cargo to grow 4.7pc annually and double in 20 years
AIR cargo will grow 4.7 per cent annually and double its 2013 volume in 20 years, according to Boeing's biennial World Air Cargo Forecast, reports American Shipper.
Growth will be led by Asian air cargo traffic routing to North American and Europe, with the Asia-North America route showing the biggest gains over the next 20 years, said the report.
Freight traffic inside Asia will also grow quickly.
Thus, there will be a need for 840 new freighters at a total investment of US$240 billion as well as 1,330 passenger-to-freighter conversions, said the report.
More than half of these new and converted planes will replace aircraft in service today.
The report shows that 2014 may turn out to be the highest growth year for air cargo since 2010. From 2011 to 2013, Boeing found the air cargo market fell victim to an under-performing world economy.
