France drops truck tax after small truckers threaten mass protest
THE war on trucking suffered a reverse when the environmentally-minded French government dropped its truck tax in the face of threatened mass protests by small truckers.
The Ministry of the Environment and Transport said it was "convinced of the difficulties entailed in introducing the tax?after a meeting with truckers.
Truckers belonging to l'Organisation des Transporteurs Routiers Europeens (OTRE) said many firms were operating with one per cent profits and the tax would put 20 per cent of them out of business, reported Lloyd's Loading List.
Before the meeting, Minister Segolene Royal, whose portfolio includes transport, called on truckers to calm down.
