EU takes Spain to court for not having security bells and whistles
THE European Commission will take legal action against Spain in the European Union's Court of Justice for its alleged failure to properly secure 20 of its ports.
The commission set a deadline of June 2007 to enact port security reforms to create a uniform level of security for all European ports under directive 2005/65/EC.
Officials have since conducted security audits, the commission said, reported American Shipper.
"The Spanish authorities launched an action plan," said the commission's press release. "Despite significant efforts, the deadline set for the end of 2013 could not be met."
