Bad weather delays completion of New York-NJ's Bayonne Bridge for 6 months

THE Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) delayed date for raising the roadway on the Bayonne Bridge, which will increase air draft from 151 feet to 215 feet to increase ship access to the big container terminals.

The bridge spans the Kill Van Kull waterway that leads to the port's major terminals in New Jersey and on New York's Staten Island.

PANYNJ spokesman Chris Valens said the raising of the roadway, a project costing US$1.3 billion, is expected to be completed in the summer of 2016 but work on the bridge will continue into 2017.

The Newark Star-Ledger said the delays are related to last winter's harsh weather, and ordinary events such as rain and heavy winds.

The project will allow larger ships, which are expected to call the port in increasing numbers once the Panama Canal expansion project is completed, to pass beneath the Bayonne Bridge.

A video animation made by the Port Authority shows how a new roadway will be built above the existing road deck before demolishing the understructure
