Los Angeles port August cargo up 6.7pc to 757,702 TEU - highest since 2010
CONTAINER traffic at the Port of Los Angeles last month reached its highest level in four years, according to monthly cargo volumes.
Imports and exports at the port totalled 757,702 TEU, a 6.7 per cent year-on-year increase and the biggest throughput since August 2010. The port authority credited "peak season volumes" and larger vessels for the increase in container traffic.
The port, the busiest in the country by container volume, has seen a recent surge in cargoes, many ascribe to retailers wanting to get stocked up in the event an impasse at the current west coast docker talks produce a strike or lockout.
Inbound containers in August were up 7.8 per cent year on year to 383,551 TEU. Outbound boxes increased to 168,248 TEU, up 6.2 per cent. The port handled 205,903 empties a 5.3 per cent jump from August 2013.
For the year to date, the Port of Los Angeles has handled 5.5 million TEU, a 7.6 per cent increase over last year's pace.
