Cargo shipments through Canada-US St Lawrence Seaway up 3pc
THE American side of the St Lawrence Seaway has reported that grain exports from the US have made a comeback this year with total cargo shipments through the canal system surpassing 2013 levels despite one of the most difficult starts to the shipping season due to ice coverage.Together, the Canadian Saint Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation as senior partner, adminsters the waterway with the Washington-based Saint Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation (SLSDC), which together advertise the project as "Highway H2O".
The state-owned SLSDC, an agency of the US Department of Transportation, reported that year-to-date cargo shipments of more than 20 million tonnes moved through the system for the period March 28 to August 31 - an increase of three per cent over the same period last year.
"The USDA's [US Department of Agriculture] forecast for near-historic yields of wheat, corn and soybeans is being proven accurate, as nearly four times as much US grain (162,000 million tonnes) moved through Seaway locks this August compared to a year ago," said SLSDC director of trade development Rebecca Spruill.
"With total transits increasing monthly following a sluggish opening, the potential for the Seaway to out-do last year is on the horizon," she said.
