Panama arrival time rules change for vessels transitting canal
OFFICIAL arrival times for ships qualified for the Panama Canal's JIT (Just-in-Time) Transit Service at the Panama Canal will be determined by new rules and not by the time they arrive at the sea buoys at either end of the canal.
Henceforth, vessels will be deemed to have "arrived" at when radio contact has been established and have been visually sighted by the Panama Canal Signal Station, reports GAC Hot Port News.
Or when the vessel has been identified on Canal Authority radar with its location, course and speed determined no further out to sea than eight nautical miles (13.6 kilometres).
At the time the vessel is sighted, specific instructions will be provided by the Signal Station regarding the vessel's arrival at the sea buoy and breakwater (if southbound), based on the pilot boarding time, said the report.
"It is imperative that vessels comply with the instructions provided by the ACP Signal Station to maintain their reservation and avoid transit delays or application of additional fees due to late arrival." said the canal authority.
