Ships go slow along California coast to save whales and improve air quality

COSCO, Hapag Lloyd, "K" Line, Maersk, Matson and United Arab Shipping Company (UASC) have agreed to slow their ships along the California coast to reduce air pollution and save the whales.

They have identified ships in their fleets that will transit between Point Conception and the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, from July through the end of October at speeds of 12 knots or less.

Participating companies will receive US$2,500 per transit through the Santa Barbara Channel, reports American Shipper.

The programme was developed and implemented by the Santa Barbara County Air Pollution Control District, Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary and the Environmental Defence Centre.

It is modelled after successful speed reduction incentive programmes at the Ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles; more than 90 per cent of the shipping lines participate in those programmes.
