Zeebrugge container volume tops all, up 9.9pc, surpassing million TEU
BELGIUM's Port of Zeebrugge Port surpassed the one million TEU mark in the first half, having box volumes grow 9.9 per cent year on year compared to Rotterdam's 1.9 per cent growth Antwerp's 2.9 per cent.
Zeebrugge moved just under 11 million tonnes of container cargo, up 10.2 per cent over last year when volumes were stunted by slow economic growth.
Overall tonnage rose 3.7 per cent to just over one million tonnes against 22 million tonnes moved during 2013's first half. Zeebrugge ro/ro volume, driven by the UK's recovering economy, jumped 5.8 per cent to 6.6 million tonnes.
But general cargo volume declined 35 per cent to 600,304 tonnes. Liquid bulk was off 4.7 per cent and solid bulk slipped and 14.9.
Port of Zeebrugge CEO Joachim Coens said he was looking ahead with cautious optimism given the many challenges facing the maritime industry.
