Ben Gurion cargo backlog clears fast in wake American FAA flight ban
AIR cargo operators are clearing backlogs at Israel's Ben Gurion Airport following days of disruption when flights resumed after the US ban was lifted in the wake of a terrorist rocket attack.
"There is not that huge a backlog because it is not the high season for cargo, and some of the freighter carriers have continued to fly," a senior cargo handling source told Lloyd's Loading List.
"El Al and CAL, the Israeli carriers, have flown all the time and they have increased their freighter capacity, and BA did not stop flying," he said.
Flightstats.com showed flights have landed from airlines including Air Canada and United, since the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) ban.
The FAA prohibited flights after a rocket strike hit 1.5 kilometres from the airport. Most airlines cancelled, including all US carriers, Air Canada, Turkish Airlines, Lufthansa, Air France and Alitalia.
Israeli carriers El Al and CAL Cargo Air Lines, along with DHL and British Airways, Iberia and Aeroflot continued to fly.
