Philadelphia first half container volume up 29pc to 219,060 TEU
THE Port of Philadelphia handled 219,060 TEU in the first half of 2014, an increase of 29 per cent over the first half of 2013.
Breakbulk increased almost 13 per cent; roll-on/roll-off cargo was up five per cent and liquid bulk cargo rose more than four per cent.
Total cargo tonnage at the Philadelphia Regional Port Authority (PRPA) facilities was up more than 13 per cent year on year for the first half.
"Cargo statistics compiled for January 1 to June 30 suggest that this will be another year of major successes at the Port of Philadelphia, with a fifth year of double-digit cargo growth," the port said.
Ro-ro cargo, mostly Hyundai and Kia car, increased 5.1 per cent to 72,722 units year on year in the first half, according to American Shipper.
"As I commented this past spring when preliminary cargo figures began rolling in, we're really entering a great period here at the Port of Philadelphia," said port authority chairman Charles Kopp.
"Between our terminal operators, our labour force, PRPA staff, the Delaware River Channel Deepening Project and support we've received from Governor Tom Corbett, the port has a formula for high performance," he said.
