ILWU dockers, Pacific employers take another break from contract talks
THE International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) and the Pacific Maritime Association (PMA) are taking a break from negotiations next Monday and Tuesday to allow the ILWU to convene its Longshore Division Caucus in San Francisco.
The announcement comes after several days of on-going talks. Both parties are expected to return to the negotiating table the following day, reported the American Journal of Transportation.
Until a new agreement is reached, they have pledged to keep cargo moving across affected US west coast ports. Talks again will be halted from July 28 to August 1 while the ILWU resumes unrelated contract negotiations in the Pacific northwest.
The previous labour contract covering 20,000 longshore workers at 29 west coast ports expired on July 1.
