DP World Vancouver Island terminal to export US-bound Canada cargo
UAE global ports operator DP World has announced a plans to provide the Vancouver Island, 60 kilometres from the City of Vancouver, one million TEU annual container capacity to be used for US-bound cargo.
DP World Vancouver and Vancouver Island's Nanaimo Port Authority have signed a three-year deal that awards Dubai company the right to operate there, said a company statement.
During a Vancouver meeting called to outline DP World's development plans, company chairman Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem declared:
"DP World, in cooperation with Canada Ports, has started the construction works of a new port on Vancouver Island to meet the growing flow of exports to USA, which will raise Canada's overall export capacities," he said.
"DP World is keen on supporting the development efforts in Canada's ports sector by delivering top-notch services at DP World-Vancouver Terminal. The new expansions will boost the capacities of Vancouver Port which is the main gateway of trade between Canada and Asia-Indian Ocean markets," he said.
Canadian International Trade Minister Ed Fast said the federal government has allocated C$4.5 billion (US$4.1 billion) to develop freight infrastructure to keep up with the projected growth.
