US west coast docker and employers agree to three-day break in talks
THE International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) and the Pacific Maritime Association (PMA) have agreed to a three-day break from negotiations on a new US west coast labour contract talks, according to a joint statement.
The statement said the ILWU needs to attends to an unrelated negotiations taking place in the Pacific Northwest, according to the American Journal of Transportation.
The parties have agreed to extend the previous six-year contract, which expired last week. The PMA and ILWU are negotiating a new contract covering nearly 20,000 dockers at 29 US west coast ports.
The extension of the contract terms means that any solidarity walkouts in support if a concurrent Pedro Bay harbour truckers strike would likely be declared illegal by arbitrators whose rulings would remain in force under terms of the extended contract.
