New Zealand urges US to be uncompromising with Japan on free trade
JAPAN should be cut out of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade talks if it does not allow agricultural imports without crippling tariffs, says New Zealand Prime Minister John Key.
"If they can't meet those terms and the other 11 partners can, then we should do a deal with those 11 partners," he said at a US Chamber of Commerce event while on a visit to Washington, Reuters reported.
Mr Key urged the US to hold firm to demands to cut tariffs, but Canada has accused the US of "bullying" because like Japan, does not wish its agricultural sector damaged by cheap American imports.
Japan has been reluctant to open up key agricultural markets, such as pork, beef, rice and dairy, which has upset US farmers, who have congressional power to block the trade deal in the legislature.
Mr Key said it was necessary to keep a high standard for the TPP, which would span 12 nations from Asia to Latin America and cover 40 per cent of the world economy.
"If I was part of the dairy sector in the United States, I would be at the president's door telling him: 'Sign up to a comprehensive deal with total elimination of tariffs,'" said Mr Key.
New Zealand which possesses a vast dairy sector, seeks free marketing in the United States, Japan and Canada.
