Vancouver port to spend US$5.5 million to ease truck congestion
SOME C$6 million (US$5.5 million) will be spent on relieving the truck congestion in the Port of Vancouver in addition to opening night gates announced earlier, reports American Shipper.
Vancouver container truck drivers went on strike in March for several weeks protesting Vancouver dwell times, only brought to an end by a provincial back-to-world law and promises to ease truck congestion.
The fresh money, to be spent over two years, will implement a common data interface at four terminals to reduce truck waiting, now widely known as the "ache at the gate".
Said federal Transport Minister Lisa Raitt: "This federal funding demonstrates this government's ongoing commitment to maintain long-term stability at Port Metro."
The plan is to creates multi-shift operations, collect data on the business of gates and terminals, before starting a reservation system for truckers and a system of tracking operational performance.
As announced, the port will add night operations five days per week starting July 1. Night gates will be open 4:30pm - 1am with day gates opening at 8am, creating 377 jobs.
