Shandon coastal port box volume up 18.1pc to 1.08 million TEU in May

COASTAL ports in eastern China's Shandon province posted an 18.1 per cent year-on-year increase in container volume to 1.08 million TEU in May, but down 2.7 per cent month to month, reports Inhaul.

Cargo volume through provincial ports in May increased 4.6 per cent year on year to 74.64 million tonnes, but was 3.8 per cent down month on month, according to the Shandong Provincial Maritime Bureau.



Foreign trade cargo increased 5.6 per cent to 45.92 million tonnes, accounting for 61.5 per cent of its total cargo volume.



Major cargo such as metallic ore fell 1.5 per cent year on year to 32.84 million tonnes, but was up 9.2 per cent month to month. 



Petroleum, natural gas and related products rose 12.2 per cent year on year, but fell 21.9 per cent month to month to 10.09 million tonnes. Coal went down 2.8 per cent year on year and 11.5 per cent month on month to 6.86 million tonnes.



The number of inbound and outbound ships in the month was just the same as the last same period and climbed 40 per cent month on month to 47,000 units, of which international navigation vessels fell 9.2 per cent year on year and 7.1 per cent month on month to 3,252.
