BNSF-Ferromex start Chicago-Silao, Guanajuato daily rail service
THE BNSF, America's largest freight railway, is launching a daily truck-train container service linking Chicago and Silao in Guanajuato in partnership with Mexico's largest rail carrier, Ferromex.
The first intermodal service is scheduled to depart from Mexico on May 27. The service operates on weekdays, according to BNSF spokeswoman Amy Casas, reported American Shipper.
Ferromex has invested US$20 million to upgrade its terminal, and since 2011 has made improvements to its mainline between Silao and the Juarez- El Paso border crossing where the two railways will interchange cars.
The new service "means that automakers and manufacturers in the US and Mexico will now have direct access to the advantages of intermodal rail in the Bajio region," chief marketing officer Steve Bobb said in a statement.
"This service offers Mexico's fast growing manufacturing sector in the Bajio region a simple way to reduce trucking costs and delays."
